Michael's is the only store I've ever seen that does the checkout line correctly. They have one checkout line that goes to all the registers instead of one little line at each register.
This is how the lines at the commissary were at the army base in PR. That's the only time in my life I can remember that set ups. At first we thought that there was a long line for something people were waiting for, so we scooted right to the "back" of one of the checkout lanes that were "short". The second time we went, we realized how we had cut about 50 people who were standing in line waiting.
